Transcript:

"E.coli O157 is really an infection of animals and it can be passed to humans from the intestinal tract of cows mainly.

Most people will probably have heard of E.coli O157 and associate it with the big outbreak in Lanarkshire, which of course was related to cooked meat.

The most common method of spread is people pick it up from the environment.

By that I mean they have some contact with animal droppings and that way that is passed into their own mouth and they swallow it and they get an infection.

At this time of year people go out picnicking and there's a danger if you're not aware of it.

Simple precautions - washing hands, making sure that children, before eating or when playing, wash their hands and don't put them in their mouth.

So prevention is particularly important in this illness and it is easy to prevent if you remember basic hygiene precautions. "
