E.coli O157 & Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome

Email to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) about Possible Outbreak(s) of E.coli O157 from Week 24 to week 43 2026.

30th October 2026

According to your weekly Notifiable diseases: causative agents report’s data for 2026, there appears to be an Outbreak(s) of E.coli O157 from week 24 (week ending 14thJune 2026) when there were 35 data reported cases for that week and week 43 (week ending 25th October 2026) when 16 cases were indicated.  I appreciate that the number of cases has to be reviewed before the end of year totals can be given.

I also appreciate that the number of cases is normally higher between May and September, but the data numbers are still on the high side. As an example, there were 46 data reported case of E.coli O157 cases in week 37(week ending 13th September 2026) which was the highest number of possible cases indicated in your 2026 data.

1. Please can you confirm whether or not an outbreak or outbreaks of E.coli O157 have occurred from at least week 24 to week 43 2026?

2. If an outbreak or outbreaks have occurred who, along with the UKHSA, is carrying out investigation(s) such as the Food Standards Agency (FSA) if the suspected cause is food. If it not caused by food, and caused by an environmental issue, what other Government Agencies or Government Departments are investigating it?
