"Cases of Salmonella and Campylobacter highest in a decade" in 2024 according to the UKHSA. Are foodborne illness cases on the increase?

29th June 2025

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data published on the 26th June 2025 for the year 2024 in the Link below, Cases of Salmonella and Campylobacter are the highest in a decade.

There were 70,352 reported cases of Campylobacter and 10,388 reported cases of Salmonella in 2024.

"Campylobacter and Salmonella infections are usually caught by eating contaminated food, including poultry, meat, eggs, raw fruit or vegetables, and unpasteurised milk products".

The report data goes onto say "UKHSA and Food Standard Agency (FSA) experts are investigating further with partner agencies to understand the reasons behind this increase in Salmonella and Campylobacter cases"

The number of Listeria cases in England and Wales rose slightly in 2024 according to UKHSA data in 2024 as can be seen in the link below. (Listeria has the highest mortality rate per number of cases).

Given "Young children, elderly adults and those with weakened immune systems should take extra care as they are at higher risk of developing severe illness" perhaps it’s time for the FSA, UKHSA, DEFRA and the Department of Health and Social care (DHSC) to look at their policies again.
