Petition update 20-07-2022: UNISON and others complain about changes to meat hygiene inspections.

20th July 2022

UNISON the trade union have made a video/animation expressing their serious concerns about the proposed changes to meat hygiene inspections, which they believe will seriously impact on foodborne illness and animal welfare. Please see their views below.

“UNISON, the public service union, is speaking out against changes to the way British meat will be inspected in the future by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Changes under the FSA’s Operational Transformation Programme will include removing many daily onsite inspections, which not only puts jobs at risk, but also undermines the integrity of the meat that the British public eats every day.

There is much to do to protect our food supplies, particularly around foodborne illness and clean meat. However, what is clear is that daily inspections of slaughterhouses not only protect animal welfare but also food standards and public health. Can you imagine what would happen if inspectors and vets are not onsite every day?”

If you live in England or Wales, watch the video here:

Stay safe and thank you for your continued help and support.  Please share this video/animation.
